Agriculture
Our country requires a vision for rural America and the farm sector that will give American agriculture a new direction, one suited to a new era shaped by the global economy. This vision must include an appreciation of the growing demand for renewable energy sources, an urgent need for conservation, a market with true competition and support for family farmers, and an increased emphasis on health and safety. I have this vision, and the experience to make it a reality.
Create a New Energy Economy for the 21st Century
Renewable energy - especially from wind, solar, and biofuels - promises a new future for rural America. A powerful renewable fuels industry will bring new vitality to our rural economy and add value to our crops. These new, high-paying jobs in renewable industries will mean cleaner air and water, and will be the engine toward energy independence for ournation.
Guaranteeing Competition, Free Markets, and Support for the Family Farm
Agriculture in America has come to be dominated by a handful of massive corporate conglomerations, and the family farmer, the environment, and American consumers suffer because of it. I will ensure that the free market functions as it is supposed to function through a new generation of antitrust legislation for the farm sector.
Develop the Economy of Rural America
As the Governor of a rural state, I know the importance of agriculture to America's economy and national security. That is why I will fight for bold new action like guaranteeing rural broadband access throughout the country and a tax credit for jobs created in non-metro areas.
Protecting the Safety of our Food and our Jobs
In the past few years, America has been rocked by a string of stories involving unsafe foods that have harmed our children and even our pets. In order to prevent any further undermining of our health and well-being, I will institute tougher standards on food imports fromforeign countries, increase FDA inspections, implement Country of Origin Labeling (COOL) laws, and fight for fair trade to promote our agricultural exports.
The Bottom Line
We need a new direction in American agriculture, and a fair deal for American farmers. As I've traveled our nation, it has become clear to me that Americans stand ready to act. I know that we can do this. All we need are the experience and leadership to take us there.
